I've fished this lake several times during summer months, but this will be the first trip for me to fish thru the ice on Mille Lacs. Buddy has a house off Hunters point that he has invited us up for a guys trip this weekend. Looking forward to it!! Any suggestions on some hot new baits / jigs / tips or tricks you could offer a guy? I've got the typical ice fishing gear including rods, reels, jigs, flasher, etc. White / Pink / Chartruese have always been my go to colors, anything else that's been working well for colors, bait, presentations would be great. Walleye will be our main focus, but I hear the lake has a good population of keeper perch and Cisco as well. Never caught any Cicso before but I hear they are great for smoking. Anyway, thanks for taking a second to read my blurb, and any and all suggestions / tips for our weekend fishing trip would be great!
Believe it or not, last week we did best on rattle reels and dead sticks with rainbows. Jigging would bring them in for a look but they wouldn't hit the jig. Only a few moments later the rattle would go off.
I 2nd what Doug wrote. group of 4 went out sunday an had a similiar bite. More on tip up with lazer hooks or plain jig heads. We did get some perch jigging but very few walleye.
Thanks guys!! Sounds like the simple still rigs like a rattle wheel or a slip bobber with a gamakatsu / lazer hook and rainbow minnows is the way I'll plan to set up for the weekend. I'll grab some shiners and maybe a few sucker minnows as well. Is it Friday yet??? -JP
Wish I could be there to try for a few walleyes outta Hunter's Point of course..
Malmo Mike & Kathy (Mermaid Princess) have to go to Maui, Hawaii in 3 weeks for charter fishing for the prized Mahi~Mahi and Ahi tuna. It is very damn good on the grill believe me.
Come on down Doug and cold ones are on me. Glean can drive the beer (Golf) cart???!
Quick update on the trip over the weekend, we caught 30 walleyes between the 5 of us, a few in the slot. Handful of nice big keeper perch also. Saw lots of Tulibee on the camera, but they were schooled up and headed from point A to point B and did not have any interest in anything we threw at them. Thanks for the tip, slip bobber and a#4 wide gap walleye hook with rainbows and shiners caught 90% of our walleyes. Good luck out there!!
Good update and report. WTG on a decent walleye count and some Jumbos too.
It is great to hear of your success and fun on the lake! You cannot beat Hunter's Point or Red Door folks for our fishing support and Formica flats 'shore breaks' ! I wish I could be there right now with my brother in a nice Hunter's rental house.
