I agree.  Last year really screwed things up for me.  This year just has to be better.

I have the AlumaCraft Elite ready to go Fishnpole. MM is concerned.

We may need it. .... MM will see you at the Red Door Cafe Jan. 3-7 2013 -- if the ice glue works.

Nice work on the ice-making weather there, Tat2Jonnie. smilesmilesmile WTG

This looks like late November now....lots of shore ice at Malmo Bay and Agate Bay. Nice job there partner....

I will be home for ice fishing and hanging out...Jan 4-7th. See you you and Jody girl in few weeks.

I will hook up with you at Red Door Cafe or Hunters Point so MM is coming home. I got my Marcum Showdown and my ice fishing rod/reels ready to go.

biggrin MM hopes we will have some good ice and a bite.

Here's where we're at with ice so far. After the coming warm up, we need to get down to single digits at night with the high in the 20s or less...........

AND NO WIND!

Thanks Jon, WTG. smilewinkhmm

Very tricky and risky shifting ice flows, but it has to start somewhere.

See you in early Jnauary to hook up with a walleye or two. My Marcum showdown sonar says: go to Tat2jonnie's house first, then drop a line whereever he says. The ice fishing rods are ready to rock n roll.

~HA~

Hello to Jody, the hell raiser, and the 'new' cat fisherperson, too.

MM was here. winkbiggrinsmileconfuse

With the warm temps AGAIN on the way coupled with that ice killing wind.... We can't ice fish or launch boats!!! I just may have to head either west or south to get my fishin' fix! This waiting on Mother Nature stuff is really trying to one's patience!!

With the latest satellite image and a cold night last night it looks like Mille Lacs lake is now ice covered. The new north end ice appears intact -- but is notorious for shifting and cracking as we witnessed last year especially ~~ with the Wealthwood fishermen floating out to sea. WOW that was a day!

It is still very treacherous out there...crycrycry

Bobber and Tat2jonnie:  How do you see it today near Red Door and East Side at Hunters Point please?

Thanks in advance, Malmo Mike.... smilewinkconfuse

Right now, the lake's ice making ability is being slowed by the amount of insulating snow we got. Most resorts will be sending out ice checkers tomorrow. I can give a better report after that. The big wind that was supposed to come on Sunday was alot less than forecast. So as a result, what ice we have is pretty flat as a whole.

Ice formula: 20 degrees for a high and 0 degrees for a low = 1 inch of ice a day.

Of course there are many variables that come into play such as wind, snow cover and sunshine (or the lack of it.) The varying temps also have to be calculated into this formula, e.g. 25 high, 10 low, etc.

ANYbody with a degree in advanced calculus with a split minor in logarithms and mathematical probabilities should have a clear picture of when the ice will be safe enough, but you need to remember....

NO ICE IS EVER SAFE.

We plan to check the ice on the lake Wednesday morning up at The Red Door Resort. We will report our findings later tommorrow.

Need to be safe guys! Its early and not worth any risk taking for a fishing trip and some fish!

Gentlemen: Good accurate reports there from Hunters Point aand Red Door. It is appreciated.

Bobber's girlfriend, Walleye Wendy is pretty quiet. She is hiding out at Formica Flat is the rumor ~ waiting for Thursday nite Bingo Bongo and Malmo Mike to come home.

Thanks Jon for that very telling video on north end spotty ice. It just is not making good ice right now so extra care from shore is needed.

Thanks Bobber, my friend, for your insights as well. smilewink

Keep the hovercraft and ice picks handy. We can just stay on shore right now and have some fun.

This looks like some very tricky and unpredictable ice right now -- until the lake stabilizes in days ahead hopefully and gets full of thata ice glue.

Jackie, (Malmo Mom) told me to tell ya that, Jon. She is keeping an eye on ya for me. (HA,HA). Fat chance.

MM is missing the big lake but I will be home in 3 dang weeks. Keep that ice maker going.wink

We went out to check the ice yesterday and found 4" of ice in the harbor. Just outside the rocks it dropped down to 3" of ice. We have about 5 to 6" of snow on top of the ice. We will take another peak at it tomorrow.

From Red Door Thursday the 13th

Relatively warm temps have not changed the ice thickness in the past 24 hrs. out from The Red Door. In fact, we found 3.5 inches of ice in a few spots we had 4 inches yesterday.

So, any weekend fishing via The Red Door access is on hold. We will check the ice again tomorrow and make a decision on allowing walking out for the weekend--or not. At this point, with the forecast as it is, we highly doubt any ATV travel will be allowed this coming weekend. Anything under 5 inches is, simply, not enough for any form of ATV or sled travel. And even 5 inches, with a crack here and there is a gamble we will not take nor position anyone else to deal with.

So, we will make an updated report and relative decision tomorrow(Friday the 14th) for the coming weekend at our access.

Thanks for your patience! We will ALWAYS err on the side of caution."

Raining pretty hard today. This is  the best thing that could happen to the snow covered ice. Now the insulating effect of the snow is gone...and now the cold will do it's thing.

4 to 4.5 inches of ice on Friday the 14th out from Red Door on the north end. Good for walking on but not quite for ATV use. We need another inch or two for the ATV's and sleds and at least 8 more inches to drive full isize vehicles.

Nice video report there Tat2jonnie. Hello to Ms. Jody and that 'cat who gets all the fish.'

5 inches of ice and 21 fow -- that is an impressive start.smilesmilesmile

Hope you can find a nice early bite there and have real fun. biggrinwinkbiggrin

It does look a little slippery out there to me ~~ so its a good thing you have those captain's sea legs handy. ~HA~

disbeliefnowink

I will bring you folks some cold ones in two+ weeks when I get home at Malmo Bay and we can try the new Marcum Showdown 5.6 rig I got for fun. I am already missing Red Door so that is high on my list of vsiits too.

Thanks again Jon, WTG

Malmo Mike Likes it. smilewinkbiggrin Malmo Mom says hello.

Great report!!! Actually nice to see an actual video of what things look like!! No snow will really help out with the ice making! Everyone pray for for cold weather to really get things going. Can't wait!
