The walleye fishing opener on Mille Lacs Lake has started off very well as far as the catch goes. Many reports are coming in of limits of walleye. Along with a fair number of throw backs over the new 17 inch rule this season. Most success is coming on rigs 8-12 foot long. Large and jumbo leeches have been the bait of choice. The areas that have produced have been the north and northeast sand breaks in the 17-19 foot range. The shallow rocks have been producing some nice fish also during the late evening hours just before the 10pm curfew! The mud flats have been producing some fish also, but most are too big to keep. The fish cleaning shack has been the true measurement of the success as far as buckets of fish cleaning. The buckets have been over flowing at The Red Door Resort. This early season success should continue into the mid June time frame before these post spawn males move off the breaks and scatter about the lake. Make plans and head on up to the lake....it’s a great time to catch walleye on Mille Lacs right now.
A few pics from over the weekend! check out the smallie! just under 21 inches........huge fish!
