down imaging and side imaging?

looking for any advise from those who have been using down/side imaging sonars? any preference between lowrance/hummingbird units. anything one unit does better than other or possible doesn't do.  I  have seen some demo clips from these units, do they really work as well as they say they do?

I'm all over the "down imaging" Thats my plan to purchase a new Hummingbird with the DI

I have spent some time looking into them at the sport shows and its sounds like a real deal for fishing walleyes on Mille Lacs. The one guy said you can count the fish on the graph!!! well we will see about that...

Yes, after fishing in my tourney partners boat with the side imaging last year! I'm on board going forward!

check'em out!

I have used side imaging and it is very helpful.

It goves you another pricise means of locating fish on structure - no doubt about it.

Can you acually see suspended fish(say 40' from the boat) or does it just show bottom structure?

Side imaging (called the sidewinder feature) does indicate fish and their horizontal postion (depth and distance) from the sonar transducer.

The sidewinder sonar has a definite horizontal range limit ... but it is helpful in fishing structure or banks where they may be 'hiding'.

It works well for shooting along a bank or structure to see if fish are hangin along a bank for example.

it works well for fish suspended up to 12-15 away from your boat.

Isn't down imaging different than side imaging? Isn't down imaging an improve look at the water column below the boat, similar to the look of side imaging. You say you are all over the down imaging. Is it more helpful than the side imaging? Does the Hummingbird come with both or is one or the other an option at an additional cost. Why the Hummingbird over an other? Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

What I have seen so far is the improvement in what you are looking at as you are graphing the bottom. Seen the change from hard rocky bottoms to soft sand is so easy! As far as marking fish...I need to spend more time in the next few days doing that....now that my other work is completed. Identifing objects.

I have been running a Humminbird with side imaging for the last 2 years.  I still can't say for sure if I am marking fish with side imaging, but it very helpful for looking at bottom structure.  I can locate transitions, punch in a few icons, and then come through and rig from one icon to the next and stay right in that transition zone.  When trolling the open basin, I have clearly marked schools of bait and fish.  Downimaging works especially well for identifying that it is a school of bait and showing the fish nearby.  Sometimes with 2D sonar its hard to tell if its junk in the water, but downimaging makes it pretty clear.  Downimaging is really neat on Lake Pepin and other places with flooded timber.  You can see the objects plain as day.  It took me awhile to get everything dialed in, but now I have it on all the time.
