What in the hell is going on with this winters weather, and they say there is no global warming. From day to day we are keeping our eyes on the ice conditions and the weather. Thank God for the lighter foam houses this season, I knew when I built them that they would come in handy for thin ice conditions, but I did not take into account that the weather would ever be this warm this far into the season. We did get just a dusting of snow and with the 40 mph winds it blew just enough snow around the houses to bank them with some real snow instead of foam rubber on the ends. We have 13 to 15 inches of ice out front of the resort on the break, so I feel safe with that and the fish are still here and feeding.
We still have not put down much ice out where there was open water just a little over a week ago. That is still sitting at 6 ½ to 8 ½ inches, but the wind has broken up a lot of it and piled up like crazy out on the humps out about a mile. We will take the 13 to 15 inches that we have out in front and be thankful to the Lord for that. The fishing this weekend was pretty decent in the rentals and in the portables, with some nice walleyes from 17 to 27 inches being caught, along with a couple of nice pike and some really nice perch, the pictures are on the website under the photo album.
The weather does not look like it is going to cool down much over the next week or more, but we do have enough ice out front to drive the smaller trucks and cars to the fishing grounds this week and we will see what the weekend brings if we will continue to allow that. We will be trying to get the larger houses out hopefully by Thursday or Friday, depending on ice conditions that is. All that I can say is be careful out there ladies and gentleman. Check at the resorts, and I do not recommend going out of the public accesses rite now with all of the moving ice packs that are still not locked in.
We are still doing well on the fishing front out in 17 to 19 ft of water off of the first break. There have been a lot of big fish from 24 to 29 inches being caught over night and some pretty nice fish in the slot also. We just can’t seem to get a break with this weather. We are fine with the 15 inches of ice that we now have we are just limited to where a guy can go as the ice just keeps shifting around out there on the main lake with the warm weather and the winds coming out of the south and west. Once again we will just do what we can to make a season out of what God has given us.
I feel very fortunate that we have good ice where we have the houses as there are some of the resorts that can’t get out at all. We are going to get the 6 hole 6 bunk houses out this week. So with that being said we should be able to allow small cars and light trucks out this weekend. We have staked off all of the thinner ice spots that are out there where we fish so it should be good to go after we get the colder temps by the end of the week. That is about it for now we will keep our fingers and toes crossed in hopes of some real winter weather to descend upon us soon.
The ice finally has some snow on it, so hopefully it will settle down a little bit. I am running out of room to set the bridge. The bite is still doing well on big fish and some eaters. The perch are starting to move in finally. There were some really nice ones caught this weekend in 22 ft of water. We are going to try to get a road out to the second reef this week and move the houses from off the break out in front. We will see how it goes. I am out the door to check things out right now. That is about it for now.
