The wind alert isn't looking favorable for good ice this year. Here's what the lake looked like yesterday BEFORE 20 mph winds blasted the lake.
Fortunately, we haven't had any heavy snow on top of this unstable ice. Continuing cold temps are healing the cracks fairly quickly, but the steady wind (predominantly out of the west/northwest) makes for shifting and dangerous ice conditions.
Make sure you bring a chisel, ice picks, cell phone and good cold weather gear if you are planning to fish the coming full moon phase.
Untill the lake has ice shore to shore it will have movement with the winds. Look what has happened this past week up on Red Lake.....two resues from the south shores of upper Red. Wind...shifting the ice pack
I'll check ice this am...but real close to shore...for now! no hurry to get wet!
I was up on Red last Thursday when one of the rescues happened. We were luckly fishing out of West Wind when the ice shifted on the south end. When we heard the news we decided not to chance it, and left. We were saticfied with what we caught, and didn't need to stay. Besides, when the wind shifted the bite slowed way down. When we first got there they were just hammerin our jigs. It was like panfishin! We kept 4, the rest were too big. We caught 11 all toegether with one break off at the hole. 2 great hours of fishing 8 hours of drivin, round trip. I had to coach a hockey game that night!
I will just wait and then follow you around on the SAFE ice (in three weeks).
That will be my Happy New Year, ya know.
I am home in three weeks when we should be at SAFE conditions and the walleyes want to see my new macho minnows. HA!
Bobber, please be careful there dude.
That dang ice is shifting around waiitng for Walleye Wanda to strut her stuff out there. She may be trying to work her way up to your house again. I got to get her a better GPS I guess.
