Is it the end of May or June.....with water temps at 60 this week the lake thinks it's still May! Another week of wet and cold weather had the fish moving alot. When the sun came out for a few days last week and again this friday and saturday the fish were really biting. This tells me with just a little stable "summer" weather that the bite could be on fire!
What we have seen these past two weeks since my last report:
There are still alot of fish on every kind of structure right now....with the deeper water structures being the best for us these past two weeks.
The deep gravel bars and rock piles along the east and south have been really good this past week. The North/Northeast deep sand breaks still have some active fish along them. The mud flats seem to be better on the warmer days. The fish again seem to hang on the deep breaks with the cold/wet weather and slide up on the top and top edges on the nicer days.
Right now you can pick what ever method you like to catch fish. Bobbering on windy days along the mud/gravel/rocks....rigging live bait on long (9-12ft) leaders.....spinners...and leadcore plug bite has started to produce a good amount of fish on all structures this past week.
Spending time graphing is really important right now. For an example this week...I was on a mud flat....starting out by graphing the top edge 24ft. Graphed along the entire mud flat at that depth...NO Fish....so I slide out on the drop off...graph depth 26-28 ft and repeated the process...found a pod of fish along the east side in 28 feet about 100 yards up from the south tip...so I placed an Icon on my Locator where I marked the fish and then started making a drifting pass over that trail and Icon. Made two passes over the fish/Icon and then they were gone. So we reeled in our lines and started to graph again. Now that we originally found fish on the east side of this particular flat...I focused my efforts in finding this same pod of fish. I went out deeper along this flat and graphed nothing...swung back up on top edge and bingo...found they moved up on the top in 24 feet....placed an icon and made a couple passes this time on the top edge. These fish stayed on this particular flat for a few hours...sliding up and down...as did we....we must have caught 20 fish out of this pod...finally the graph was blank...checked shallow and deep...time to start graphing a new flat.
The fishing is really good right now....spend some time graphing...grab your favorite rigging pole, spinners or Rapala and come up to the lake.
On a side note...for all you Musky guys....we had two close encounters with 50+ muskys on two different mud flats this past weekend during the Hunters Point Tourney. First day I was reeling in a 22" walleye...the walleye got to the surface and up from the depths comes this HUGE musky sitting a foot under my walleye...the walleye starts freaking out...as the musky opened its mouth and just missed...we did net the walleye as the musky sat just under the water for another couple seconds before returning to the depths. The second day we were on another mud flat and the exact same thing happened.....I joked with my fishing partner that we might need to start doing figure 8's with the walleyes at the surface!
Good luck this week...hope everyone has a great Fourth of July! Until next week....we hope to see you on the water!
One last thing...a big thank you to George/Linda/Scotty and the Hunters Point staff and volunteers for all your hard work this past weekend. The best tourney I fish every year...from the launching/parking/shuttle service/great dinner/pay-outs...a first class tourney!
