How would one do this without using  lead core?  Can you just use a bottom bouncer with trailer?  How long of a trailer?

Yes, that would work.  There are many ways to get your crankbaits in the strikezone.  The easiest way is to buy baits that dive to the desired depth you want to fish.  Most baits have that listed on the package, but you can also get the Precision Trolling book too.  Another option would be snap weights.  They sell a kit at most sporting goods stores, but essentially its a 2-3 oz weight that you clip on the line instead of tying it on.  A bottom bouncer will work.  You could run a stick bait 5-10 feet behind a regular bouncer weight or 3 way setup.  A couple split shots on your line above the lure will help it dive deeper too.  You could get a nice leadcore setup for $100 too.  I trolled crankbaits on Saturday for a little over an hour and didn't go more than 5 minutes without a bite.  I wish I would have found that pattern earlier though because I had to head home at noon.

I have a couple reels I could use with the lead core.  May have to give it a try.  Is there a magic speed or do you just experiement?

Two miles per hour is a good starting speed.

I dont think you even need to spend 100.00 for a setup. Its best to have line counter reels, but thats the beauty of lead core line, its metered every 10 yards. I believe if I remember correctly I bought 2 Okuma line counters and 2 Okuma lead core rods for about 60.00 each. Its not like you need a high performance rod and reel to troll lead core. A snapweight kit runs about 30.00. Good luck and your going to find  it is alot of fun to use and catches plenty of fish!
