Another opener weekend in the books. I have a group up every year for a little fun, yet pretty competitive fishing. The slot fish where pretty hard to come by for our group. Fish from the 20" range to 29" range where showing up at the business end of the rods at a pretty good clip. But the eaters where a little challenging.
I bobber fished the rocks the entire weekend and had 5 slot fish and guessing 15-20 over fish. The water temp ran in the 47-50 degree range on the eastside. We marked fish everywhere from 6ft- 18ft but found the more active fish in the 10-12ft. Mid day was our slowest periods with little action. Most of our fish came early sun up and sundown to 11pm. Fishing slow from everyone I talked to seem to be the ticket.
My setup was a moon glow #4 & 6 (Chart/Green/Glow) from JR's. Was also keeping plenty of weight on my setup to keep the bobber spearing thru the waves to keep my leech action minimal. This setup out-fished the opposite 5/0 until my partner switched over and he starting popping fish with the famous hellbender rod. We had a great time out there dealing with not the best weather but it wasn't to bad. Of course we have a gorgeous day going today on the big lake.
Our group had 52 slot fish for 28 persons fishing. Most of these fish came from 14 anglers though. LOL Not sure what the other 14 where doing.
Tony has updated Podcast report he did Sunday. Sounds like he had the fish going during the day also. Wish I would have caught this report before I went out Sunday.
We were on Gull and the weather did not cooperate to good. We ended up with three nice Walleyes, a real nice Jumbo, and four Northerns over 20 inches. The Notherns went back, but were fun to catch.
We had a good weekend of fishing, even with the weather Saturday. Saturday was okay but Sunday was really good. 2 guys with 22 fish, 10 keepers and others up to 28". Most of the fish came on lindy rigs. Color of hook seemed to be a big factor for us. The best time for us was Sunday noon to 4pm in 18-20 fow.
Fished the north end all day Sat. It was the best day my boat has seen on mille lacs. We boated 22 with 9 going in the box for three guy's. Most of our fish came from 12-13' range pulling lindys .3-.5 mph. We did catch a few trolling thunderstick jr's. Bad weather but the fish made up for it.
Saturday was terrible for Malmo Mike and Malmo Tom -- But Wild Ass Walleye nephew Dan saved our bacon and got two nice walleyes (Saturday) for our family.
Sunday, better weather but I am still skunked on my new boat. Fishing is NOT fair of course -- They catch them all around me and the walleyes do not like my leech or whatever?
3rd Day is the charm: Monday morning - Malmo Mike gets 3 nice walleyes and Tom and Dan each get one more nice legal Willy Walleye. What a great Morning.
We are sun burndt and have walleye filets end of story but we worked hard for them after a crummy Ssturday!
Our opener wasn't too bad. We were happy with what we caught for the amount of time we actually put in on the water. We had our best luck on the rocks in 15-17 fow with bobbers. We weren't able to do much rigging because the trolling motor mount broke Saturday. Without the trolling motor, drifting wasn't managable in the wind. Saturday night from 8-12:00a was the best. We picked up 5 keepers and some overs. We totaled around 25-30 fish between the four of us for the weekend.

We had a good opener, my first on Mille lacs. We went crappie fishing during the day and went walleye fishing during the evening. First night we boated 20 with 6 eaters. Sunday we caught 12 with a couple eaters. We caught our fish on the east side shallow rocks and avoided the bumper boats up north.

This was my 3rd opener on the big pond and by far, my best. Fished the south end, waited for a weather window after Midnight Friday and hit the shallow rocks. Pulled some nice keepers and fried for breakfast with eggbake. Went our again, on another weather window late Saturday night. Pulled a few to send home with some buddies. Weather was better by late Sunday afternoon and was able to start pulling lindys. Picked up some pigs that had to go back.
Fished the NE side on Monday had a great day keeping 6, boating 10 with an awesome 26" pig.
I added a short video clip. wasn't too prepared with the pro hero camera. forgot it was on my lid for awhile then filmed a bunch of crap, then the battery went when I needed it. Oh well, next time.
