"It is a cultural thing.. I tried to explain that in the thing about getting the kids back to the cultural ways of their ancestory. you look at it as trying to save a few fish.. or alot of fish maybe.. they look at it partially as trying to save the next generation of their people..so yes netting is about the future to them in a very big way.. "
"cultural ways of their ancestory"?? Really? They had 200' gill nets back then? Talk about a " apples to oranges" argument. Did their ancestory bring band members from neighboring states over to help out too? I've read all your posts, and actually agree with a lot of your views, but this is a little too much to take without a response....
Just returned from seeing what there is to be seen here on the eastside. There where a few Conservation trucks in the liberty landing but nothing going on. I went up to Ceder Creek and the lot was completly empty. I did hear this morning that the north west wind that blew in early this morniing swallowed up some nets south of Ceder Creek and a retrieve effort was underway. But I didn't see anything. This was at 10:30am.
This is exactly why people get so fired up about this. It is not a racial thing. It comes down to respect for your natural resources.
I can remember growing up and seeing the "Indian Chief" on T.V. with the tear rolling down his cheek while reflecting on the destruction of natural resources. (I have actually learned since then that he may not have even been an indian, but that is neither here or there) The point there is, that as a kid, that caught my attention and I became aware.
Nothing in the treaty says that the Walleye need to be netted during the spawn.
Nothing in the treaty says that the nets need to go out when there is still ice on the lake. This is not the first year nets have been "lost". (Take note of Steve's pictures earlier in this thread).
Nothing in the treaty says that non-walleye and carcasses should be dumped on private land. (see pictures of Denny's land from last year) And no, this was not white people dumping this to get the indians in trouble! Are you really serious with that one?
Nothing in the treaty says that every effort should be made to fill the quota, even if that means bringing in tribe members from other states.
I wonder what the old Indian Chief would think about what is happening @ Mille Lacs in this day and age. I certainly bet there would be more than 1 tear!

This is a GREAT statement... I firmly believe this statement !!!
I'm not a native american but it am going to stay at a Holiday Inn Express this weekend !!!
So let me get this straight........we got 17 nets lost on the south end, a few on the east end. So tonight the bozos just put nets out on the north end, but now the wind is switching again (From the south 10-20mph)THE ICE IS GONNA MOVE?
YOU"RE GONNA LOSE MORE NETS!!!!!
IT" S REALLY OBVIOUS THAT YOU GUYS DON"T KNOW HOW TO NET FISH!!!
THIS IS TO THE 1837 TREATY PARTY THAT IS MAKING A MESS OUT OF OUR LAKE;
WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?
ROOKIES.................'
In case any body forgot what that looks like
I WISH\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

X100 How is this responsible and how this this the ancestor way of protecting and harvesting from the land? This is pure irresponsiblity and excessive greed.......
E-mails sent. They did show the dumped fish from last year so maybe they will report again. Wanton waste, we would get a huge fine..... not that we are all equal.
I am curious.....if nets are lost does that count towards there quota? It is my understanding that they must say where they r putting nets b4 they go out right? So what if each net is numbered? And everytime that net comes in the fish in it r weighed. K, well then if a net goes missing then that counts againts there quota. It would make more sense to do the math on just how much a net can hold and that's the amount going towards there quota but I don't see that happening. This would deffinetly start holding people more accountable for there actions. And it would dampen some anger between the sides.
nor were the tribes quotas met, we came up about 9,000 pounds short. So, as with you, ours are not guaranteed either. Hopefully we can reach quota this year, its always a disappointment when we cannot meet our allotment.
That's funny Swill - Please explain why you stopped netting before reaching walleye quota last spring.
Word has it that 12 were found and recovered by noon. The other 5 have been accounted for apparently. Whatever that means. They may have been ripped or something else.
I don't know if they ever found the 5 in front of Hunter's Point,
Quote from Lady "people that waste their lives and brains. It is a terrible waste on both sides.. we as parents can try to raise our kids right and keep involved in there lives. the tribe is trying to get to the younger ones now by immersing them in tribal culture before they loose them to gangs and violence and addictions. wich is why hunting and gathering of natural resourses is so important to them."
UFDHA!!!! I've spent the last 2 hours reading this thread, this among other things really stick out to me as important. Teaching cultural values seems to be important to her, along with that, children should also be made aware that this rock we live on is crowded, Lawers, and Judges will not solve the fact that conservation of resources should and will be the answer to all problems, curent and future. I dont think that Ladys father or his fathers had all this muckity muck pictured when they were using natural resources to live on. useing what the needed and not wasting. Nothing is going to change the fact that the problem is the solution, we must all use our resources together, to conserve for generations to come. Responsible management, resposible fishing, sharing allocations responsibly, managing together. Together, all the lawyers and judges will not conserve one fish.
I've fished this lake since 1965, my grandfather lived on this lake, my father was raised on this lake, I was always taught to respect this lake, and its contents. The problems started when the lawers got involved. lawyers take money, cassinos make money. maybe if the "money" was used to manage and teach conservation along with US gov. money, instead of linning the pockets of lawyers....just sayin.... how bad do you want it??? I WOULD LOVE TO HELP ONE WAY OR ANOTHER. Call me iw ill be there, I am far from a negotiator or lawyer or banker. I Love Mille lacs as do most who read this, writing checks will not solve this, resposibillity will, remember, 7 BILLION PEOPLE and growing............sorry for the bad grammar and spelling
Doug, tatt, and gang...keep up the good fight , I wiil see you all on the openner 100% for sure.
So, anyone out there? Specifically Mn native lady. How did the netting go? Were there enough spawning fish taken to feed your kids? And the neighbor and the multiple generations?
What do the indians do with the spoiled fish that were caught in lost nets? Do you at least use them in your gardens as fertilizer to help feed the family?
Not trying to be a smart ass. Legitimate questions here.

Several fundamental steps must be taken to ensure the tent is clean and ready for storage until the next camping gazebo trip. Knowing how to clean and store a tent correctly is easy.
