I just wanted to put a quick report. First, I want to thank all the Hunters point gang for all they do this time of the year! Drilling your way from Hunters to the Boot to stake a safe road, on first ice, is very dangerous....and these guys are always the first on the lake to the mud. Thanks guys!!!!!!!
As for what we have seen out there....it is your typical first ice...except alot rougher than years past. If you are heading out this weekend....take your time to and from your fishing destination. Approach cracks with caution...if you are off staked roads, take extra steps in drilling as you go.
Starting this weekend, our guide team will be on the ice everyday the rest of the winter. I will have a detailed fishing report early next week.
Here is Tat2Jonnie's report from 12/07 on staking out ot the boot:
We have trails through the rough ice that heaved during the heavy wind that we had last week. We have some other heaves (like 2-mile) that are problematic. The ice is 6-10 inches in most places, though. I just got back in from the Boot and have a trail staked from the North Road an average of 8 inches all th way to the Flats. With all the cold temps, the lake is cracking in a few spots, but will also be healing quickly. The lake should be locked in within the week.
Caution is certainly advised as Jon says wmany times. Malmo Mike
Hunters does have stakes to 2 mile...Dawson....lakeside...and the boot and they were working on the jug today. They have drilled there way to 3 mile and liberty 2 mile...and will be working on staking those thursday and friday. The ice is REALLY rough...lots of pushed up ice from 2 mile in. I haven't heard of too many reports yet....just check in with Scotty or George in the morning...they will give you up to date info on cracks/heaves before you head out.
This time of the year is always good for fishing....just be careful out there. The ice really moves this time of year...especially with little or no snow. A trail you rode out on might be all cracked up on the way back in.
I will post a detailed fishing report early next week. I would start with a gold Macho Minnow/tipped with minnow head. Jig aggressively this time of year...changing your jigging style if the fish dictate. Usually first ice walleyes are aggressive to a jig...so drill some holes...and always..if you aren't marking fish, it's time to move.
Good luck to everyone this weekend!

Thanks Scot, Good detailed report which what the guys need. I hope to ice fish a bunch but not until I come home again in January. Good catch a few and some one fo rme. Malmo Mike
I took the sled out Friday. Fished the mud. Absolutely no problems with the sled. A few rough spots of a hundred yards, but mostly smooth sailing. Hope this helps.
