Fishing report 6/6/10

The walleye fishing on Mille Lacs Lake continues to be good. I had another good week of fishing the shallow rocks and transition areas on the eastside of the lake. I even made my way down to the gravel this past Saturday and pulled blades catching a few fish. The evening bobber bite continues to provide some good action. I have been setting up during the evening hours in 9-14 fow. The hours of 7-9 pm have been the best times for this angler. While fishing the transition areas the time doesn’t matter as much as locating fish on your electronics. I have been Lindy rigging 8 ft rigs with large leeches and maintaining my speed at 0 .4 - 0.6 mph. I have found the transition fish hold in pretty tight areas, so making long runs is not in the plan. I have had to work these fish over a bit. Getting fish to go on one pass while not on another.

The high light of my week was this past Saturday evening. I had a half day trip with the father and son team of Chad and Andy Dill. Chad and his six year old son Andy joined me for some evening bobber fishing. Chad had hoped that his son Andy would get an opportunity to catch his first walleye. On this trip Andy not only caught his first walleye, but also caught the most on the trip! The first photo shows me holding Andy’s first ever walleye a dandy 20 ½ incher caught while bobber fishing in a 21 ft transition area. Andy caught on to the bobber fishing methods pretty quickly! It wasn’t long and he was letting Chad and I know how big the fish was. "It’s a little one" or "big fish !" he would shout out. It truly was a special trip for both Chad and I.

I hope to switch gears soon and get into some smallmouth action. I have seen some smallmouth while going in and out of our boat harbor. Its would be difficult to take time away from the walleye’s when the fishing has been so good. We have caught some dandy smallies while bobber fishing the shallow rocks, so I know they are around! The month of June is my favorite time of the year on Mille Lacs if you want to get in on some great fishing. Head on up to the lake and enjoy some of the best walleye and smallmouth action that Minnesota has to offer.

Way to go Bobber! Those are some nice looking fish. Way Cool. I appreciate your good report. We have had two wonderful walleye filet dinners since I returned to our ranch property in Black Forest, Colorado. My lovely wife goes nuts over those fresh walleyes and my recipe. She may let me come to Malmo Bay again real soon. It was great to meet you at Hunter's. Cold ones on me anytime. The Governor here (near my state office) says hello and 'set the hook'. ha.ha. Take care, Malmo Mike

Great report Bob!  I couldn't take watching the weigh ins Saturday, so I almost just ran out there and anchored up next to you.

You should have........you would had a blast catching some......no need to worry about those weigh-ins, what it is...is what it is!

Two of those fish are named 'Malmo Mike Junior' & 'Malmo Mike & Sons'. Way to go Bobber. When does your run for Governor start please?  We need a good Governor. You're our man. No netting, State Walleye Day every Friday and so on.
