I had the pleasure again this opener to share my boat with Dave Koonce from Praire Du chien, Wis. We had a really good opener! Enjoyed the sunshine and those calm winds..but who can complain! We fished the shallow rocks early Saturday morning in 9-10 fow. We managed in a short time the first fish of the season shown below. Dave caught this 27 ½ inch walleye under a “New Splash Bright Bobber”!! After a quick picture it was back in the water to swim another day. This fish had some weight to it, which was a sign of the health currently in the lake. After a hour or so in the rocks we headed up to the northeast sand near the Fishers Resort area. Dave and I pulled 8 ft Lindy Rigs with large leeches in the 15-19 fow for most of the morning. The bite was on fire for a few hours. We caught a fair number of 15-16 ½ walleye. Around 11 am we decided to look at acouple other areas. In these other spots we found less fish so we decided to move on to a transition area off some shallow rocks near Agate Bay. In this area we again pulled 8 ft Lindy Rigs in 20-22 fow. This area payed off big time! We caught our share of fish and headed in to the harbor at midday with around 20+ fish boated between the two of us. The evening bite was off for our boat. We manage just two 15 inch walleye at dark. I think there might have been too many anchor ropes hanging down in the water for the fish to get around and get caught. I would like to know how many boats there were on Mille Lacs this past Saturday evening........a big number!! Sunday morning we started and followed much of the same plan as we had done on Saturday. Only that we caught more numbers on this half day trip. We came off the lake at 1pm with 6 slots shown in the picture below with a fair number of 15 and 16 inch fish released. Our big fish on Sunday was a fat 24 incher that was the little brother to the 27 ½ that came in on Saturday! A real dandy of a fish! Over all a great weekend to spend in a boat with a good friend! Thanks again Dave! Over the weekend Dave and I caught and released over 40+ fish easy! I should have have brought the clicker along!.....but who needed to count.
A great fishing weekend.
