Roach's Guide Service Report

I just wanted to put a quick report on ice/snow conditions and fishing report from the past couple days.  Our guide team was back on the water Saturday figuring that the snow would really limit travel.  The good news is that alot of the snow blew off the lake.  The bad news is that there is still enough snow that drifted up in areas that you need to have chains or 4 wheel drive on your ATV to get through some of these areas.  Snowmobiles are able to go anywhere right now and if you have a big enough ATV you can make it cross country as well.

The only slush areas we found over the past several days is around areas that people have fished the day before.  Drilling lots of holes on a structure will bring the water to the surface.

Hunters plowed a road out to the mud flats on Sunday afternoon and we saw the first truck out on the mud yesterday.  As always check with the resort before you come up to check on ice conditions.

The fishing before the snow storm was really good and we found alot of the same since saturday.  There continues to be alot of keeper size walleyes along with some really big walleyes.  We had a 30" and 29" walleye pose for some pictures this week during a trip, then back down the holes to be caught again.  The gold buckshots and new Macho Minnow have been really good this week.  I would say the 1/12 oz Macho Minnow in all gold caught the most fish.

Deep gravel bars, transition areas, and mud flats continue to produce this week.  We have also seen alot of 10-13 inch walleyes showing up the past couple days.  It is a great feeling letting those little guys go knowing that the years to come will be good fishing as well.

As always, if you are not marking fish it is time to move.  Slide off the edge, move up on top or try a different place.

Tony will give some more details on his thursday Podcast.

Happy New Years!  We hope to see you on the ice!

The Macho Minnow is a new spoon by Northland.  It has a Kastmaster type body, with real image on it like the buckshot spoon.  At Gander and some of the other places, you will find them next to the Buckshot Rattle Spoons.  They have a little fish tail on the split ring next to the hook.  They're a wonderful spoon for me so far this season as well.  the gold with the glow red back has been great!

That is the 29"....my biggest walleye through the ice.  It was so fat I could barely get her through an 8" hole....there was no coaxing her into biting...she saw the spoon and slammed it.
