Thursday night they were coming off the north end so hard that the first five or six feet above the water was brown as you looked across the lake at sunset!!! It was quite an experience to be sitting on the water as this one started!!!
The fishing was really, better in my opinion!!! The walleyes cooperated much better than last year. We caught some slot fish and some for the bag. We did it with bobbers w/ leeches and pulling blades w/ crawlers. Wished I would've had more time to experiment with the cranks a little bit more, but felt that there was enough activiity on the flats to keep exploring to find the right concentration of fish with the aforementioned presentations. Did find some nice pods, but didn't really get them going fast!!!
We did not find as many muskies as we did last year, but considering we had friends who fished out of Red Door the week prior and only musky fished, they didn't see a fish. We pushed the issue earlier in the week and then kind of lost interest to be hard core about it and still saw three with one hooked and lost. Saw no big fish. Did hear that 13 teams fished the MAC tourney the first weekend we were there. The winning team got a 53" during the prefishing on Friday, then won the tourney doubling up with a 50 and low to mid 40" fish. Second doubled up with a pair of low to mid 40" fish and third caught an upper 30 to 40" fish to sum up the tourney catch. I got there on the 18th and fished for musky from 10:30 untl 3:00 a.m. and took advantage of the extra bed the boys had a the Red Door before they left at 7 on Sunday morning. Then I went out to the flats to see if I couldn't scout up some fish (eyes) off the two flats that were really getting pounded on the north end.
Of course the smallies did not disappoint. We did not catch as many as last year, but our largest fish was 20.25" and we caught many in the time we fished in the 17-19" range, nice stout fish!!! Friday night we had our own bass tourney for a $15 purse and 19.25" won it and I had at least one fish that appeared to be as big or maybe just a little bigger throw the tube once or twice or a second fish throw it again with a jump that was at least as high as my head sitting in the boat. I know I heard all three in the boat exclaim that there was the winner, oh, there goes the winner... the nice thing was we made the winner buy the first round of drinks at Carlsona!!! It was nice to see Sandy again, she even remembered us!!! Of course with Tommy leading the fun last year, some times we can be hard to forget!!!
As with everyone else, weather seems to be the big conversation piece regarding how their fishing was. It was helpful in some cases and harmful in some cases. Our biggest disappoinment with it was the T-storm that would force us off the lake, disrupting the original plan, but not stopping us from divising another plan and not keeping us enjoying our week.
We are going to look at exploring another lake next year or changing our time frame if we come back. As for me, I will be back and hopefully before the end of the year!!! I'll try to some pics up as I get some more time to do so.
More later Doug, wished we'd gotten a chance to meet during the week.
