Ok, so spring is coming, time to get back to work on the boat. I have a older merc 165 I/O. Its currently out of the boat due to some work ive done on it over the winter.
I plan on hoisting it back in soon...
Q... do I need to remove the lower unit first to do this?
any thoughts, suggestions are appreciated.

I/Os generally sandwich the transom. How did you get it out in one piece? I removed one I/O intact, but it involved a sawzall on a rotted transom. A bit of advice- a $40.00 manual is almost always cheaper than anything you screw up without one. I'll check my shop for a manual you can have, I don't wrench much anymore.
