This was my first ice fishing trip to Mille Lacs this season, and it will be the first of many! When we stopped in for our road pass, Jason suggested we head to the mud and off we went. We found a fresh cut road to where we wanted to fish and not another fisherman around. The 3 of us didn't stray far from that area the rest of the weekend. On Friday we found most of our fish on the edges or right at the base of the flat in 34 feet. With the added fishing pressure Saturday, we found most of the active fish 50-100 yards off the reef. Perch colored jigging spoons like 1/8oz Vamints and Buckshot rattle spoons were the ticket. I even had a pair of 16 inch walleyes fall victim to a #12 diamond jig tipped with a waxie. Most of the fish were in the 8-12 inch variety (Good to see), but the 3 of us found limits of 14-18 inch fish, as well as some Jumbos perch, and a few 25-27 walleyes. I almost forgot how much of a rush it is to battle these big fish through the ice. We were on the water from 10am-4pm each day and actually had our best fishing in the afternoon. Good luck to everyone this week. I'm hoping to make it up again towards the end ot the week. Don't be afraid to stop in at the resort and have them cook up some of your catch either. Mmmm...
Sounds like you had a blast Fife. Great job locating those fish!
One quick question if you don't mind; Did you have any set lines/deadstick lines out along with your jigging line? If so, how successful were those lines?
Again, congratulations on your catch. If you are up next weekend, look us Simon Invitiational guys up!
We had a tip up down for a couple hours and no takers. I know having a setline within feet of your jigging spoon can be very effective, but we were moving so much that it would have really slowed us down.

I was also up for my 1st time this winter last weekend. It was my 1st time spending any time at hunters and it became one of my favorite resorts on the lake. Good service, good food, good drinks. Will be spending more time up on the east side this winter!
Fishing was pretty good with 3 fish caught over 25" and a few eaters
Our bigger fish came on rattle reels with plain red hooks one around 10am, 9pm and noon. The keepers came on perch colored JR's jigging spoons tipped with a minnow head.
Thanks, I think we really lucked out that weekend. Lester and I will be up again tomorrow through Saturday. Say hi if you see us on the ice or on the Formica Flats after dark.
