GREAT PERCH & EELPOUT HUNT
Permalink

I attended the tournament today and had a very nice time as usual, but left with one huge question. Why was a professional fishing team with a guide whose business is sponsored by Hunter's Point Resort allowed to collect prize money? It is my honest opinion that this is totally unfair. The advantage this team had over ocassional Mille Lacs fishermen like a lot of folks in attendance goes without saying. The proper thing to do would be to say "George, draw some names and give this money away." Or, go down the list to the next entrant or two. Perhaps I am alone in my view of this, but it just didn't sit well with me. Any other thoughts on the subject?

I agree! Let them be eligible for all the door prizes but, a ringer is a ringer.

i had the same thought as well and i guess i have mixed feelings about it. personally i dont think that anyone sponsored or working at a place should be able to collect a prize of any sort in somthing like this but as far as the fishing goes i guess they put in tons of time on the lake and if they out fish us average weekend warriors than so be it.  i thought it was kind of a kick in the pants tho.doh

These are pretty laid back fishing contests and thats why they dont pay big money for the fish. Not that it is chump change but there are plenty of guides and locals also out there fishing.Heck a lot of people dont even fish they buy a button and go to the drawing. It doesnt bother me you just have to catch a bigger fish than they do.One more ounce and I would have had that check today.Theres always next weekend.

this was my first year at hunters and first year at the contest. i to was a little upset that some of the guides were able to win money  but hey they did catch the fish i know they fish the lake and it is there job but i think it is luck of the draw we never fished the lake out of hunters and we had 1 fish 1/2 lighter than 3rd place a little disappointing but yet it was still almost a lb. good eating was a good contest and i feel that even a couple (pros-guides) won money so be it. they fished as well as the rest of us i feel they may have had an advantage but it was luck that got them the money. i have no problem with that fact. congrats to all the winners cash and prizes. i do have to say i wish our numbers would have been called. maybe next year.

I definitely agree that it is totally fine. Like stated earlier, there are guides and others in the tourney from other resorts. I know that they have an advantage, but thats just part of the game. We're all up there to have a good time and if someone that is a guide pulls out the biggest fish, congratulations. thanks to everyone up at hunters for yet another fun weekend.

I didn't get one fish this winter, but I sure had a great time. Friends and Family... is what a lot of us love about Hunter's. For those that won, congratulation.

You all cry like my three year old when he doesn't get his way. You lost and they won, they "outfished" you and your not happy about it - to bad. If you have not learned it at this point in your life -  I'll tell you - you can't win all the time. The underdog didn't come from behind and win - what a shame.
Grow up and go "outfish" them next time. furious
I won nothing - had fun
I got my truck stuck trying to "outfish" the rest- still had fun
I'll do it again next year - PRICELESSbiggrin

I don't think that big of deal needs to be made of this. I personally don't have a problem with the way it went down. Tony and his guys work hard fishing out of hunters guiding clients. Having said that they are not on the Hunters payroll or employed by Hunters. They guide out of, meaning using the resort for a meet area and entertainment when off the ice.
Like Castaway said these are pretty laid back events for the sole purpose of getting people together for a little fishing and buss fun. Lets keep this civil guys.

I would agree who ever won paid his $10.00 bucks and caught the biggest fish, but I also believe everyone has a right to his own opinion, and I'm sure they will voice it by either buying a button next year or not.  In either case no one needs to be called names.

I have an Idea-change the subject.  So we can't catch any eyes, where is the best place to go after the Perch and what is working.  Some help please, one more weekend in the house and then it's out with the portable.

I could give you some coordinates but then they will say it was rigged.hehe.Transition areas have been the best for me all year anywhere from 25-30 FOW.I try to find a area with little traffic and drill some holes. If I dont get a bite in 30 minutes I drill some more shallower or deeper or move. These fish arent that schooled up yet and there is a lot of feed down there so it isnt fast action even when you find some decent ones.I caught 6 nice ones on Saturday in about 2 hours with 1 at 1.12.The big ones are hitting hard and almost took the rod out of my hand.I caught all of them on waxies but I think the big ones would have hit anything as they were very aggressive.Good luck

I was not able to stay till the end.  What was the biggest fish?  Will the winners from the drawing be posted?

We had one fish to weigh.  It was just shy of a pound so it was not in the running but was a nice fish none the less.  We did keep 9 fish over 10 inches and all were caught on fresh shrimp sliced thin and about a half inch long.  The fish that did show up pounded the bait.

I enjoyed the day on the lake with my son!

George said all raffle winners would be posted on Hunters web page.  I do know that there are several prizes that were not claimed on saturday. Hope your luck is good!

The winning fish was 1.3.You can buy shrimp at almost any grocery store but I believe they are using the uncooked ones.Lundeens also was selling some live freshwater shrimp last time I was in there.

The shrimp did indeed come from our local market.  I bought the uncooked frozen type.  They do need to be uncooked.

I think the uncooked ones will also give off more scent.I tried a piece of one yesterday but the fish werent biting on anything.I think the cold weather slowed them down.I was only out for a couple hours and had a few lookers but no takers. Its supposed to be sunny and warmer this weekend so there should be a little more action...I hope.
