Where are the muskies?

The answer is they are in the boat harbors, under the docks, and in the middle of the lake. They are everywhere. When trolling the abyss don't forget the top of the water column. There are a lot of muskies just a few feet below the surface. There are muskies deep in the mud pursuing eelpout. Muskies are feasting on eelpout because the metabolism of a eelpout is very low in the summer, they are slow, and easy to catch. That is why the bulldawg works so well on Mille Lacs Lake. We use fake rubbery eelpout. When trolling deep water the perch, walleye, and tullibee colors produce better then bright orange or chartreuse. The key to our success is covering miles of water with multiple lures to find out what lure will produce. What worked yesterday will not work today. We lost a huge mid 50's muskie on Wednesday. We work our tails off to get a huge muskie for a client and losing that fish still kills me. We lost 6 fish and every loss was simply because the muskies are still not aggressive. We keep our hooks very sharp. We don't have to use the pliers much in July as the hook falls out in the net. Usually in September the muskies inhale the lure and leader. Water temp is still low and the best is yet to come. We have a coach and football players from Tennessee for the next 3 days so you will see my boat all over the pond. Yellow flag is no fish, blue flag is northern, and red flag is muskie. Be safe, I got another big hook in my leg this week when the fish flopped. Good luck and post some pictures!

I usually run along the edge of the flat much like lead core for walleye. I circle and try to cover all the tips of the flat. Running the mud is high risk high reward. I have done well dead center of 9 mile. I like half way between Boot flat and the bridge, then run up the edge of Greg's. Trolling the flat is very easy as you don't have to deal with the gong show inside with casters and weeds. One of my deckhands "Jumpin Joe" boated a 56" in his own boat today.
