The walleye fishing on Mille Lacs Lake has picked up over the past week. The shoreline break out in 26-28 feet has been productive for some of our guests at The Red Door Resort this past weekend. Trolling lead core and crank baits has been the most productive method. The fish cleaning shack has also been the tell tale to the success that some have had. Over the weekend we had more buckets of cleaning’s than we have had in some time. The fishing should only get better from this time of the month moving forward. Once the water temperature drops down into the mid 60's we should start to see more fish being taken during the dark of night pulling cranks along the shallow shorelines in the 6-12 ft range. The slip bobber bite in the shallow rocks can also be a good option during the windy days along shore. Look for those fish in the 6-12 foot areas.
I was back up to Mille Lacs for the second time this year over Labor Day weekend. The first two days (Fri & Sat) were spotty. However on Sunday we went out at 3pm until dusk. There were 6 of us on the pontoon and the results were 16 rock bass, 7 walleyes, 4 perch and 3 smallies with probably a half dozen missed opportunities!! We were just off a rock pile on the north shore. Great time and am already looking forward to next year.
I was up over the weekend as well- Myself and my 3-1/2 year old son. He loves to fish. I can not even go out by myself any more . We did ok-not as good as previous trips but not bad- We trolled the north shore areas all over. We caught some nice fish each day. nothing fast and furious but rods were bending just enough to keep us busy. I can also say we caught ALOT of small walleyes as well. Some were as small as 5" and alot of those 8-10" buggers. Nice to see and the coming years should be good lets hope. The water temp is dropping pretty fast. We did not try it but we seen more and more boats set up at evening all over the shore lines.
Trolling Leadcore is sure addicting. I love it and my son can not get enough of it either. Steve - thanks again for setting me straight on this Leadcore and your tips!!!
Thanks Guys- Fishing now has a whole new meaning for me! I love getting my son out. He will be my fishing partner now for a very long time! Very soon I will be taking him on his first nite trolling run which should be interesting.
My dad took us kids out fishing when all us kids were young and I felt like the winningest kid in the whole world when I got the biggest fish of the trip. Hell, I just loved the whole experience of getting out there with my dad and sharing the love he has for fishing. And learning stuff.....
He's the one that taught me to captain a launch. He drove for Fisher's Resort for three decades. He's still my hero, buddy. You've got that same love you're passin' along.
My Dad had us fishing outta Wigwam Bay and Agate Bay when I was four years old.
Now that is what I call being a lucky kid.
What a thrill to catch a big walleye when you are that age?!
By the time I was 7 or 8 years old I was so excited to go to Mille Lacs I could not sleep ...and then I was getting to have some skill at it I believe.
That is aboslutely wonderful for a young fisherman!@
