The walleye opener on Lake Mille Lacs was one to remember for 2011. We were greeted with strong northeast winds and light rain during the am hours on Saturday. As bad as the weather was for this angler the early hours of our fishing made up for it! My guest and I caught some nice 15-16.5 inch walleye on Saturday morning. We caught thirteen fish by 10am with eight of them measuring in the slot. We caught our fish on slip bobbers fishing in 11-12 FOW on the rocks. On the north end we had some success drifting sand with 8-9 ft Lindy rigs and leeches. Our big fish of the day was a dandy 27.5 walleye caught in 16 FOW on an orange glow colored hook.
Weather wise Sunday was a much better day. Fishing wise, it was much slower. We fished till midday Sunday with limited success drifting the north end sand. The water temperature during the weekend was 45-46 degrees. Much colder than I would have liked it. I would have preferred the mid 50's.
Other reports from around the resort were mixed. Some did pretty well pulling cranks during the dark of the night. They were catching some pretty good numbers right out front of The Red Door Resort.
The forecast this week calls for warming temperatures, which I think will really turn on our fish. Look for some great walleye action this coming week on Lake Mille Lacs.
Make your plans now for a fishing trip to the lake and enjoy some early spring time fishing.
