I was curious about jigging for walleyes on ML. It seems like almost everyone that fishes ML uses leeches, the debate is typically the size of leech. Does anyone jig or pitch jigs with plastic or minnows? This seems to work on just about every lake and river that has walleyes. With the cool water temps, I would think that this would be the best option in water 8' or less. Thoughts?
Went over the top of my waders, so according to the height of my goosebumps, I'd say 40 degrees is a good guess.
But back to your question, Mille Lacs is a unique lake. What works in alot of other Minnesota lakes doesn't work in his one. I have caught walleyes jigging off the rocks with smaller jigs in the early summer months tipped with a smaller leech. Seems to work best in light wind, 18-21 ft. drifting alongside a shallower reef like Lakeside, Agate or 3-mile. I use a 45" snell and enough of a slip sinker to get it down to the bottom, yet not get hung up too much in the rocks.
I've found they don't work good in the sand or the mud......unless you're bobberin". IMHO
did they get that rain up there last night and this AM ?? that stuff should have warmed the lake a degree.... I am gonna guess it will be close to 47-48' by saturday... this is just my unedumacated guess...
For some reason, I've never got on a good walleye jigging bite on Mille Lacs. We hammer the fish on Winnie and Leech with jigs and minnows, but the same presentation in similar areas on Mille Lacs just doesn't seem to work.

What works EVERYWHERE ELSE IN HE COUNTRY, doesn't work on the Mille Lacs walleye.
It's funny (not HA-HA kind, either), but you basically gotta fish like us old-timers (fished this lake over 50 years) to be able to catch walleyes on this lake.
Best leech wins the race. They like leeches after they spawn. (I used to like White Castle after the bar)
