I am coming to Mille Lacs for the first time in January. I have reserved a 4-Hole Deluxe ice house at Appeldooorn's Sunset Bay. I will be there from a Thurs-Sun. I'm looking for advice on what to pack, where to eat, etc...
Hunters Point Resort, Castaways and Carlsona have great food on the lake. January can be a tough time to fish but as long as you are armed with some knowledge and a gps and stay on the move.
Pack your walleye gear as well as perch gear. A bucket of tip-ups is definitely a good choice as well !!! Also, I don't know how many are in your group, but on nice days, a game of hooch or washer horseshoes can fill an afternoon of tip-up fishing. Mostly, have fun and if you have portables, bring em !!! As stated, lots of places on the eastside to eat, starting with where your staying and a few miles north to Hunters !!!
FYI, Carlsona burnt to the ground a few months back... good food.... hope it's coming back !!!

Unfortunately, we don't know about the fate of Carlsona. That was the best on the North. No doubt there are many here that have great memories of meals there. But Hunter's Point was always the best on the east and it remains the best today. It's worth a little extra drive for the food that George and Linda and chef crew serve you up . The good stuff crew.
No doubt on Hunters Food !!! If you want the best pizza.... ask for a Glenny !!! Had to have one saturday night.... along with your favorite cold beverage, you won't be disappointed !!!
whether you are planning on staying in the house or going out in portables, if you want to really catch fish you need to JIG for the walleyes especally at dawn and dusk. dropping a line down with a bobber will not cut it in January. a good reel and medium action rod will really help your odds of catching fish. weasels, macho minnows and other jigs that you can read about on this forum tipped with a minnow head.
PS - broasted chicken at Hunter's is great as well....
