Any idea or predictions on how the early ice bite will be this year. We are back to 18 and under fish. is that right?

as far as I know, this is still in force...???

Effective Thursday, July 15: Release immediately all walleye 20.0" through 28.0"; Possession limit is 4, with only one over 28.0".

Everything you need to know about DNR changes can be found here:

However, it is subject to change after the first of the year in 2011, back to the old 18" slot.

2010 Mille Lacs Regulations

(including tributaries to posted boundaries)

Walleye

Walleye: Release immediately all walleye 18.0" through 28.0"; Possession limit is 4, with only one over 28.0".

Effective Thursday, July 15: Release immediately all walleye 20.0" through 28.0"; Possession limit is 4, with only one over 28.0".

Northern Pike

Northern Pike: Release immediately all from 24.0" through 36.0". Possession limit is 3, only 1 over 36.0". No spearing.

Smallmouth Bass

Smallmouth Bass: Release immediately all less than 21.0". Possession limit is 1.

Cisco

Tullibee (Northern Cisco): Possession limit is 10.

Muskellunge

Muskellunge: Release immediately all less than 48.0". Possession limit is 1.

 

Other Species: Follow statewide regulations.

 

No Culling

 

Night Closure: No one may fish for any species or possess fishing gear on the lake from 10 p.m. through 6 a.m. starting at 10 p.m. on May 17, 2010, and ending at 12:01 a.m. on June 14, 2010.

If regulations change, they will be posted at public accesses and at www.mndnr.gov/fishing, or call 1-888-646-6367 for current information.

One example of a tagged fish

Tagged Fish: Please record tag number, species, fish length, date & place caught, angler type (e.g. boat, launch, shore, ice, etc.), and whether released (leave tag attached) or kept (send tag). Postcards are available at public accesses & businesses on Mille Lacs Lake. Fish can be reported by:

  • Contacting or mailing Minnesota DNR-Fisheries, 1200 Minnesota Ave. S, Aitkin, MN, 56431
  • Sending an e-mail to fish.tags@state.mn.us
  • Online

Thanks Jon; I knew the slot reverted to 18 inch maximum. Oh well.
We need Bobber for Governor.

Actually Malmo, the protected slot is still 20-28.  Until further notice, the smaller protected slot remains in effect.

Yes, Waldo... agreed -- the 20-28 inch is still in effect.
It reverts back to 18 inch slot by 2011.
The DNR site says: that the current slot expires November 30th actually..
Wish I was there catching a few right now.
