If a 54" and a 57" musky in the same week equates to "musky fishing on Mille Lacs being in the toilet"' I'd like to know where you're fishing and if you're catching more or bigger fish. Congrats to the guys that caught them and I'm sure your "trophy" will look great on the wall. I'm jealous!

There are so many muskies. I see them on the graph EVERY day while I'm fishing walleyes. and even if they were all harvested that were caught, there'd still be thousands. Let me know if you need some spots that you're sure to catch one............ I'd be glad to give you the coordinates. (Feel free to take home a trophy for the wall.)
I've been trolling crankbaits for walleyes in shallow water when the wind is blowing and have caught (and released) more 30" plus northens and muskies this year than in years past. You can't beat the fight on 10-12 pound test but I hate the slime on the carpet - just kidding. Mille Lacs is in great shape!
My biggest musky is a 50 incher and it swam away got a pic and had a reproduction done i look at that fish every day and smile you dont have to kill big fish have a replica done knowing the fish is still swimming makes you smile that goes for all fish not just the muskies if you need a place to go to go to Artistic Anglers there the best.
In the last 3 years of guiding muskies only 1 muskie has been killed on my boat intentionally. To be fair with clients who may only fish muskies once in their life I have a 50 inch minimum. The client has to decide what should be done with a world class muskie. I heavily promote a replica as I get compensated for selling them. The cost to mount or get a replica is very expensive and most people frame a 8 x 10 picture instead. Hooking mortality does happen rarely and all muskie guides have to deal with that. To say that you guide muskie and have never killed one tells me you haven't caught many. Late fall muskies are very aggressive and inhale the lure and leader. We cut hooks quickly and do everything possible to save the fish. It is very important to me as a guide to have my clients watch the muskie swim away and my release is as important as the catch. Muskies live about 20 years and a 25 year old muskie is very rare. If you look at the stocking data from 20 to 25 years ago it indicates that about 3000 muskies will die every year of old age in Mille Lacs. In 1992 5000 were stocked in 1991 10000 were stocked, these fish do not live forever. To kill a world class muskie is not a mortal sin as some will tell you. Those that say killing a muskie is wrong need to stop killing walleyes. If you fish according to the state law no one has the right to say a word. Most are simply jealous. I am all for changing the state law to a 54 inch minimum.
Well Rickster, thank you for saying that. For anyone to say Mille Lacs is in the toilet bowl simply is getting wrong information. I wouldn't trade our muskie water for any other in the world. I cannot find on the internet another fishery that is producing the number and quality of world class muskie like Mille Lacs is. If we had a massive tulibee kill the catch would once again exceed the Leech Lake frenzy. I witnessed many Mille Lacs lake frenzies when we cannot keep the lure in the water and all boats have nets out. The fish I saw caught by me and other boats if hung on a pole like they did back then would have far exceeded Leech Lake. Let them all think Mille lacs is in the toilet bowl and go somewhere else. I highly recommend that more muskie hunters get educated on the stocking data and learn about the 1980's Wis and the 1990's LL strain. Currently, 27% of our muskie are a cross between Wis and LL strain. If a computer designed a muskie fishery to produce the next state record, Mille Lacs would fit it to a T. I have frequently been asked by the purists guides why I am not 100% release. I have many young kids catch world class muskies and I cannot demand a 13 year old release a 53 x 26 which has only a few years left to live and is a fish of a lifetime. The first thing they say is "get a replica". A 55" replica will be about $800 and many parents cannot afford it. I also let them know their jeolousy is showing. My friend called him for a guide trip and said he wanted to mount one and if he gave him a $100 tip could he kill it? The same guide agreed to it. Most would kill the state record, they know, you know it, and I know it. So what is wrong with killing a muskie when they would do it to? There are currently over 30,000 muskies in Mille Lacs that have been growing enough years to have the potential of being the state record. With well over 3000 muskies dying every year of old age, a young kid killing one is not hurting the fishery. I will continue to promote replicas and photos, but, if the dad tells me he wants to mount it for the kid, I don't have any problem with that whatsoever. How many over 28 inch walleyes are killed in tournaments but that is 'acceptable'. But killing a muskie is a mortal sin. Its a fish! I don't question anyone on their fishing style so please don't question my style as long as we both are fishing according to the state law. Purists are getting goofy. Let the purists soak in their jealousy.

i have to agree with you mille lace is a great musky lake the only lake that would comepare is vermilion its further north and there is less people i guess thats why i like vermilion but ill be on mille lace this weekend ive had rotten luck the last 2 times i was on the lake never seen a musky fished vineland bay hard one friday i was the only one out there i guess that told me something next time i tried the rocks down by hennepin island same luck that day to so i guess ill head up to the north end and give that a try im after that 55+ fish took me 6 years to get my 50 know im after that 55 any way its going to happen might not be this year or next but it will happen so is any one seeing any numbers up on the north end or is that going to be a bad spot to go
I saw the photo of the 57"er. It was next to the Ice chest at Nitti's Bar on land...That was a dead-(could have been State record in two months) fish. Way to go!!DS
Muskys and Smallies are mainly a catch and release fish so if you want to take one and mount it go ahead.Im sure more die of other causes during the year for other reasons than get taken out by anglers.Myself I would do a replica but that is my choice. If you prefer the real deal that is your choice. It sure isnt going to hurt anything by harvesting a few.
