Ouch...does anyone else have a sunburn? As I'm sure many of you experienced first hand, you couldn't ask for any nicer weather than we had this past weekend.
It sounds like the fish were biting in all areas of the lake, which is great to see. My group targeted east side rock/sand transition areas, we hit NE sand and hit several mud flats and found fish in all these areas. I know some had better luck than others, but overall I would say it was a great opener.
We talked last week about where to fish on opener. Memorial Day weekend patterns were what our guide team focused on and the fish were there. 7-10 foot snells with large leeches took all the fish in my boat. Something that seemed to really make a difference this weekend was speed. I was running around .7-.9 along these transition areas, but as soon as I started marking fish on the graph, I immediately slowed the boat down to .3-.4....it seemed like you almost had to sit right on top of them. Sometimes it took several times going through those pods of fish before you would get them to commit.
If you are heading up to the lake this week, fishing should only get better. Stable weather pattern, warming waters = bug hatches, and fish on about every structure on the lake right now. Speed is still very important, keep your hook size down on your rigs (#4, 6 or #8). I would target the deeper transition areas...18-24ft. It sounds like there will be some wind this weekend...which should also help with some of those fish.
Good luck!
Until next week....we hope to see you on the water!
