Rockman's Report/Perch bite on bug humps

2/15/10

Things seem to be holding together at the access this weekend since the colder temps moved in. The boat ramp is working very well, especially for the wheel houses coming on and off the lake. I made an executive decision this morning to plow roads to the bug humps way out, even though I will not be able to fish them myself this season. Maybe in three weeks or so I can attempt to fish from the safety of my truck. I will have to bring Jonathan out with me to drill and scoop out my holes. I spent this morning, plowing a road to the bug humps that are about 5 miles out from the resort to the East. Had it not been for the fact that I sent some people out to the bug humps on sleds on Sunday, I would not have punched a road to them this morning, but they pounded on the bigger perch and tulliebees.

Anyway, they ended up with 3 limits of perch in the 11 to 12 inch range and 3 limits of tullibees all about 14 inches long. They started on the 28 fter and got 12 perch in the morning and then the bite slowed off by about 11:30. So they went over to the 30 fter and finished up their day. There were a lot of spots, as I was plowing, that were pretty wicked with ice chunks and snow drifts. Some of them were even with the bottom of the door of my truck, before I even touched them with the V plow. Of course the wind was blowing out of the direction and you could only really plow in one way or the windshield was full of snow and you couldn’t see, so it took me a little longer than I expected because of that.

It took me about 4 hrs and a tank of diesel fuel, but the roads are open and the spots are ready to fish. I will be going in for my foot surgery in the morning, so hopefully everything goes well and I can join you on the perch hunt yet this season. If not, we will still be keeping all of the perch roads open until late March or early April or until we can not get out anymore. The bite is going to only get better and better as the weeks go on and with the bug humps putting out nice perch already, it could be a great bite ahead. That is it for now at the Rock, you all have a safe week and I will update you all on my foot recovery as we go along.

Wish me luck with my foot!

We will see ya

When we see ya

The Rockman
