i'm from the southwest corner of mn used to fishing small lakes and farm ponds going up to Mille lacs for the first time thursday through saturday dont care what, but would like catch something any help would be appreciated. staying just north of isle thanks
The key is to find the active fish. Search them out and fish them, keep moving. They are all over the lake, can't really give you any more specifics. It changes everytime I get out myself. Bobber fishing and rigging has worked best for me.
IMO Mille Lacs is a tough lake to fish or least it has been for me. You will get a different answer from everyone you ask about Mille Lacs and a different answer on how to fish it. Most are trolling cranks and bobbers with a leech are still working on the rocks. I hope you have a good sonar unit that will mark fish because the fish seem to move around a lot. One day you can mark a ton a fish in one spot and you go back the next day to the same spot and nothing. So like Mouse said you have to find the fish first. The day time bite doesn't seem to be very good so evenings or early morning seem to be better or at least for me they have. Try and find as much info about Mille lacs and read every post you can find. It will help point you in the right direction at least.
Mike, what part of SW MN are you from? I used to live in Marshall and I would fish Shetek, Sarah, Cottonwood, Balaton, and some of the other little lakes. You will have a great time at Mille Lacs. Read the past reports on here. From what I saw last Saturday, the East side rocks should be good all day when its overcast or windy. The perch should be showing up in numbers too. There really are fish at all depths this time of year, but some spots will be better than others. When I'm bobber fishing I give an area 20 minutes and move if no bites. Sometimes its only changing cleats and moving 30 feet.

have'nt had time time to get to the computer since we got back from up north until now, had a great time up there caught about a dozen nice walleye while up there but didn't fish real hard. thanks for the advice. now the kids really want to go along next year, but that means a bigger boat . thinking pontoon, but have never fished from one only drank beer and cruised the home lakes down here. Any ideas? thanks again for the help really like this site.
Mike, keep an eye for when the launches are on the bite. Nothing beats fishing from the launch, especially if you have kids with. I can guarantee a great time, will be had on the launches at Hunters. I was on 3 this past summer and have many great memories !!!
