Yeah it's new this year. Looking to see if anyone else is having any problems with their units because on mine I did the update for it and now it won't mark fish and sometimes the depth won't read. And is very slow at reading the depth when the unit is first turned on. I emailed Lowrance about it but, haven't heard back yet
My friend sent his HDS 5 in a couple weeks ago. It was only a month old, but it wouldn't turn on. I have some other friends that are using the HDS7s and 8s and haven't had any problems.

Yeah I did change the angle of the transducer to see if that will make a difference. The thing of it is though it was working fine before and I never moved or played with the transducer so I wouldn't think that's the problem unless it got bumped without me knowing it. The other thing my buddy has the same unit and had the exact same problem I'm having now and tried two different transducers and he ended up returning the unit and now it works fine. He just did the update on his unit and will be trying it for the first time this weekend so it will be interesting to see if he has any problems after doing the update.
Yes I have gone through all the settings and tried different depth settings and none of them helped. And yes the unit is set for the right transducer. I'm really thinking the unit is bad was hoping to get a different unit but Reed's wouldn't do that. My buddy got his at Cabelas and they just gave him a new unit and upgraded him with a bigger transducer and he had his for almost 3 months.
O this is a great one. I bought a new Lund Pro-V this year and had a HDS7 put on it. The HDS7 went dead twice. Some of the same probs you guys are talking about. Worked until I did the download. Then would take a long time to read depth, probs marking fish then would eventually not turn on at all. Sent the boat back twice thinking it was a prob with the boat frying the unit. They keep telling me they were bad heads and replaced them. Now I believe it is a prob with Lowrance. I didn't know anyone else was having the same probs. As for trying to get any answers from Lowrance GOOOOOD LUUUUUUUUCK, their cust service doesn't suck it is nonexistant. These units should have never been put on the market. They were not ready. You shouldn't have to do a down load right after buying something like this. My unit has been working for the past 2 months but I still don't trust it. It will go out again and I will be back at square one.
Lutzy.. this may or may not help . I bought my unit from Cabelas this past spring, Cabelas offered a class which I attended, a lowrance rep was there to teach the class, I have been trying to find that info because the teacher gave us his email address (his personal address)which he would field all questions. try calling Cabelas to see if they still have his info laying around, the class was back in early May, it could be worth a shot, like I said before my unit is working great, good luck, keep us posted, I'll keep trying to find that info for you.
Well I played around with my transducer this past weekend and got it to work alittle better but, not the way I think it should be working. It's still slow are reading the depth when the unit is first turned on it only marks fish once in a great while. It's been a week and half now since I email Lowrance about it too and have not heard back from them. Probably never will. Calling them is nearly impossible as you get put on hold right away.
sorry to hear of your troubles with Lowrance....been there.
What I would suggest is this: get sometime....call them on a phone that has the speaker feature! and get ready to be on hold for anywheres from 1/2 hour to as long as 1 hour+- I've been there, you will get ahold of a tech. and get your problem solved.
It just takes alot of effort.......not something that anyone should have too do or want to do.
We just bought a new ranger and intentionally put the older 552 and lcx 112 on them because we do not want to deal with the HDS units. I took me two months to find a LCX 112 because every one is buying them out. Most shops were trying to "give" the hds units out. I sent several emails to Lowrance just asking for reconditioned 112cs or anything like that and no response in two months. Not even a "we don't do that". Like most of my buddies in newer boats and some pros I know say...should have bought hummingbird. But I love the 552s and the older lowrances. Bench marks for the industry. I guess we will just have to wait for Japan to figue out that we are not happy with their new model HDS units untiul they get a couple of years or re-designs in.
