Have a friend who keeps a camper trailer at a resort up on a Brainerd area lake.A campground not unlike many on Mille Lacs.Apparently the county has come through and identified several campers that are not keeping the license tabs current on the camper. The threat is this….Get the tabs current or the county will tax the lot you are renting.Meaning they will assess the lot size/location and send you tax bill for what they feel that piece of property is worth.Don’t pay the tax bill and they say they will fine you and/or seize your camper!
Now, the way I look at this situation is this way. Camper Trailer tabs are needed to pull your camper down a public road. They should not be needed to park on private property or property you rent from a resort. The county is already collecting taxes on the property from the resort. So, the thought of them double taxing a piece of property is ridiculous! On top of that, why should the county even care? The tab money goes to the state not the county!
I’d like to hear some of your opinions on the topic.Has anyone heard of any similar situation around the lake?It is somewhat similar to new county rules where a fishhouse must be pulled out on the lake at least one a year. Thus forcing a new license. (Another dumb rule!)Whats next? Must take your camper for a lap around the lake once a year?
I see what your are saying.... Could they come back to the compound and do the same thing ??? I won't find out, unless I don't get drawn for Ripley. It makes an annual trip there only, from the compound. Interesting.... wonder what beaurecrat came up with this one
I feel your pain. I had a trailer at the red door for 13 years. Aitkin county would send us a threatening letter every year. They would go through the reosrt and check everybody. Of course they would do this in the winter months when everyone was away. Their trumped up rule was if you were not up to date on your tabs, they would bill you for the size of your deck, if you had one, next to your trailer. basically charging you a permit fee for your deck. We all know also that the state sends out your tabs in Feb. Who is going to drive up just to put tabs on your trailer if you live in the cities. Aitkin county just wants you to think just that and just pay the bill. Sadly enough people pay it and they shouldn't because most decks are not secured to the trailer like they must be on a house. Hopefully, things turn for you. I wouldn't pay it. Keep the tabs up to date. It's not worth the hassle. These counties nickle and dime enough as it is.
I was pissin' and moaning about the trailer tab deal to my neighbor at the campground this weekend. Turns out he got billed for the $150 deck fee by the county early this year. He tried to fight it all summer. Then they sent the bill to the resort owner. My neighbor finally gave in and paid the fee!
I have a small deck. But it lays flat on the ground. The guys who got billed all have raised decks. So, there must be a little more to it. If they send me a bill, there will be a nice little bon fire the following weekend!
I'm still resisteng putting tabs on my parked camper until I get a letter from the county or the resort owner really presses hard. I basically told them this weekend that if I put tabs on my camper, the camper will get moved down the road back into Mille Lacs county! Then they can deal with another empty lot!
Rant over....

Putting tabs on your camper trailer, is it like if you kept it at home in the cities in your driveway? I know you can not have an unlicenced/ out of date tabs... vehicle, camper etc in your driveway.
