I would love to target smallies for day on the lake! I think it would be a ton of fun. I know of a couple guys who come up from Kansas and they don't pick up a walleye rig...all they fish are the smallies!
Great smallie fishin' as our first trip to the lake last year was saved to some degree by the smallies. We were there to target 'eyes, had a great time with Bobber, fish some muskies and take advantage of whatever the fishery would give to us after that!!!
We struggled with the walleyes, moved a dozen muskies, but couldn't get any one to hit one of hooked baits and found the smallies to be great fun after working the other species over with out as much success. Fished from Sunday to Sunday the 3rd week of July and starting on Tuesday, we started searching for a few smallies. Turns out that we released, with pictures upwards of 60 fish over 15" long up to 21". My avatar is one of those pigs!!!
Always hoping to get over early, but probably won't make it until July 19th and it can't come soon enough!!!
I love the smallies and will definitley be trying for some this weekend. Saw a nice size that was washed up on the ramp last Sunday. Too bad to see it there.
