The weekend report from this angler on Mille Lacs was a good one!! We enjoyed one of the better openers in past years. I had the pleasure of sharing my boat with Dave Koonce of Praire Du Chane Wis. on Saturday and again on Sunday. We started out Saturday am with only 5 fish boated, but by the mid afternoon into the evening we had the Beckman net busy!!! We caught fish while rigging the northend sand up near Malmo. And caught good numbers off the rocks during the evening hours. Saturday evening between 7pm and 10pm we boated a bunch of smaller males in the 13-14 inch range while ending the day with a nice group of 17+ fish. On the sand we targeted the 15-17 fow and on the rocks we bobber fished in 7-9 fow. Over the weekend we caught fair numbers of slot fish and a few fish over the slot. The pictures attached are of some of the overs! The big fish of the weekend was 25 1/2 inches. All the fish were caught on large leeches! The water temperature I found on both Saturday and again on Sunday to being warmer on the eastside rocks than up on the Sand break by Malmo. The rocks had temp's in the 52 deg. range and the sand was 49 deg's.
The early bite on Mille Lacs this May has started out on the right foot for this angler and hope that it only gets better each day!! The lake should be a good location to visit for the some great walleye action!!
It was also a wonderful opener for Perrrrrch, Brian, and me. Headed out around 8:30am on Saturday. By 2:30pm we had our 12 keeper fish all ranging from 15-17 3/4! We caught 24 total fish during that time period. Largest was a 27" spawned out female. Some of the males were still "milking". We caught everything in about 18 feet of water.
Went out on Saturday night with 4 guys in our boat, and we caught another 26 fish, all different sizes on bobber rigs. Also boated a smallie and nice looking rock bass! It was all C&R at night, and it was a blast! Some of the best night fishing I have been a part of in a while. All were caught in between 6 to 7 feet of water.
Here are some pics!
