Hate to do it everyone, but could sure use a little explanation regarding ML. I've never fished ML, but have been a regular at Upper Red for the past 5 yrs or so.
Bringing a small group to Mille Lacs this year rather than Red and wondering if you guys can explain the bottom and the depths just a little.
Gravel vs. mud...walleye vs. perch. Structure? If a guy were to search for structure, what type of drop should I try and search out.? Lure colors...I see perch colored is good, how about gold, silver, glow reds/pinks?
Common depth for the jumbo's when they start moving toward the blood worms/mayfly hatch?
We'll be staying with Hunter's Point, and very excited about it. Thinking the first weekend in Feb will be a good one possibly for the perch + walleye's here and there.
We're not the type to take a perch limit per guy and a walleye limit per guy out of the lake, actually more of a catch and release crew. But its always more enjoyable to fish a new lake with some helpful hints such as these.
Thanks guys and I'll be sure to post following the trip with pics if there are any. Hope everyone did well this weekend.
The early Febuary time might be a good time to start targeting the perch! My past experences have been best looking for the perch in the transistion areas off of the rock/hard bottom areas into the soft bottom areas. Hunters has a number of these areas within a few miles of shore for this. As far as the walleye goes, the mud flats have been the best areas for finding walleyes this season. Near the flat or just on top during early and late daytime hours. And off the flat during the midday time frame. The baits for the perch have been jigging a Northland Buckshot or another type of jigging spoon in a 1/8 ozz size. See the pics attached.....the walleyes have liked the same lures for the most part but maybe up the size to a 1/4 oz.
Another point I would like to make is make sure and check out Tony Roach's weekly podcast here on this site!!! He does a great job each week telling what is working and where!!!
The folks in the resort will point you in the right direction, they will also have their rental houses in the perch areas by than also!!!
I could carry on a little more...but others will surly add their info here also....
Great info and thanks for the effort put into the response. Were staying in the sleepers for a few nights so its nice to hear that they're proactive in moving them to target fish. I'll give it a heck of an effort.
In the end, fishing with no catching is a heck of a lot better than workin!
I agree with what Bobber has offered up. And tuning into Tonys report has great info every week. The jumbos get going better the later season. late febuary early march will usually increase your catch rate. Lots of perch on the camera this year compared to past.
