Fishing Report for Saturday 12-20-08
Permalink

The reports are true!! the walleyes are biting....

Our group gathered at Hunters for breakfest Saturday morning prior to our trip. Around the breakfest table we made plans to head out to the flats and fish till the weather would force us in. The snow was coming down at a pretty good rate as we started out just after daylight. Hunters Point has plowed roads to the Blue Jug and Boot Flat areas at this time. So our trip out was an easy ride other than the snow, cold and wind! Once off the plowed roads it got more difficult to get around on the Atvs pulling the gear. A snowmoblie would be a better in the snow covered conditions right now. I know I was stuck a few times trying to get too the spot!
We setup on the southend of a flat and started to drill some holes. Once I found a fish on the Vexilar I setup the Otter and started to fish. Our group of six managed 15 walleyes in around 3+ hrs of fishing as we headed back off the lake at noon once the snow and wind picked up limiting our visibilites. Our fish ranged from 6-8 inches on up to 24-25 inches. We were using 1/8 and 1/4 oz. jigging spoons in 25-32 fow. The fish were on top early and later moved off the top. Had the weather been better I know we would have been more mobile and had more fish.

With the holiday week ahead of us, make some plans and head up to Hunters Point and enjoy some time at the lake. With the fish biting you might even get a fresh meal of walleye!!

Merry Christmas and Happy " Walleye Fishing" New Year!!

Thanks for the report. How did you talk Josh into going out on the ice?

Good job on the write up Bob. It was a good time. Like you said if the weather would have been better we could have really put the smack on the fish. We actually had 16 fish for the morning. I didn't want to count this one. My first fish of the ice season.

George, Jason and the crew where going this morning (Sunday) clearing roads and pulling houses.
The road system out there really looks good. They told me they will have everything ready for the upcoming weekend. I seen 3 of the biggest pout I have ever seen this morning also.

It took a lot of convincing from Big D on Friday night!!! I'm glad he did, it was fun! It was good to get out there for the first ice trip of the year. If the fishing keeps up, there may be a few more ice trips over Christmas break.

I have not seen or heard much about any small perch like we saw last year. I know my boat harbor was full of small perch 2 inches long this past fall! Some experts say that a small hatch like that are effected by the freeze up of the lake and many of the numbers are lost from it.

I do believe that we will see a good perch bite later January into Febuary!! With all the perch that are in the system.......many of them will be the "right size" very soon!!! Jumbos!!!
