2018 Late Ice Out ????

Hello Mille Lacs Fishermen and the East Side Gang,

It sure looks like a late ice out from all views of the lake and bays today! Fiddlesticks GC was just visited by Nanook of the North. Nice.

I have ordered in the Flamingos for a Sun Dance and a nice slow snow melt.Flamingo dances start next week.

The latest snow just protects the ice as well and there is no immediate forecast of warmer temperatures for Isle Bay.

I guess I will be fishing at Hunter' Point Resort at Formica Flats at this rate. The green bottles are easy to find in the snow, EH? See you in May Tatoo Jon!   Hello to Bobber and the Ertls.

The Bomber Boat is ready but it has NO PLACE TO GO. Please send in the dancing Flamingos!

I don't see being in the boat on Milly for opener this year. no   But happy the lake will be spared of tribal netting.  I'll take that trade off any time....

Howdy Jon,

I quite agree. Right on!!!  they cannot net with the lake under hard cover.

We can always hang out at Hunters Point or up to Pine Inn north of our place.

Have a good one,

MM

Howdy Bobber,

Hello to the Ertls,

I do not see 2018 Ice out until fairly late in May perhaps by 3rd week of May.

So I will see you at Hunter's or Red Door for the walleye fingers.

At least there can be NO NETTING.

The Bomber Boat wants to get out there but it will be a NO GO.

Have fun,

MM Malmo Mike

Hello Eastside Gang and Mille Lacs Fishing fans!

Will the 2018 Ice Out break the 2013 record late ice out of May 16th?

With a collective sigh of relief, it seems the entire state of Minnesota has embraced the better late than never spring weather that finally decided to arrive last weekend.

But juxtaposed to the summer shorts and t-shirts, fresh out of winter storage, is the glaring layer of ice still covering the big lake. And as fishing opener inches closer, the question that seems to be on everyone’s mind is Will 2018 break the ice out record set in 2013?

Past ice out records

Although records for ice out on Mille Lacs are sketchy prior to 1979 – the year that the Messenger officially started keeping track – all signs point to 2013 (May 16) as the latest ice out on record, narrowly beating 1950 (May 15) by one day.

The record-setting late ice out in 2013 was something that started generating hype as much as six weeks prior.

In the March 27, 2013 edition of the Messenger, an article titled “Another record ice-out this year?” graced the front page. When that edition hit newsstands, the average ice depth observed by fishing guide Brad Hawthorne was 32 to 38-inches. Contrasted in everyone’s minds that spring was the notable precociousness of the year prior in which Mille Lacs ice out occurred the earliest on record: March 26, 2012.

It was in the May 22, 2013 edition of the Messenger that the record became official: “Ice out on May 16 wasn’t cause for celebration for those who lost business,” a front page headline read.

Between March and May of that year, various articles and editorials mused on the length and intensity of winter and the late arrival of spring. Sound like a familiar scenario?

Isle Bay observations

According to journal entries taken by Tim Chapman of Chapman’s Mille Lacs Resort and Guide Service, there are many reasons to believe this spring will give 2013 a run for its money.

As of Wednesday, April 18, Chapman guessed there was approximately 30 to 36-inches of ice in the area of Isle Bay adjacent to his resort – a guess based on reports from clients using the Chapman’s lake access. According to one of his clients, the power head on his 36-inch auger was touching the ice when he finally broke through.

“You gotta figure we are at least two weeks behind where we were at this point in 2013,” Chapman said. He cited numerous indicators, including the fact that in 2013 they halted truck access on April 6 while this year trucks were allowed until just last Friday, April 20. Beyond the impressive ice thickness, there were other, more subtle signs of a late spring as well. “In 2013 I saw my first seagull on April 4,” Chapman said as he paged through his journal. While he hadn’t seen one yet this spring, he said he finally heard them for the first time on April 18.

So what does this mean for fishing opener?

This will be interesting to see if the improved temperatures may affect the solid ice on Mille Lacs.

Mille Lacs Lake Fishermen:

We have a long way to go ~~ but the ice is getting darker now that considerable snow has melted.
There is about 30 feet of shoreline open water at Appledorns in Sunset Bay.

Red Door Marina is blocked by ice... we will get there.
Send in the Flamingos.

Howdy Glen and the Fine Ertl Fishermen!

I quite agree.

WOW, Isle Bay is almost completely open today and marinas on Eastside and Rd Door have nearly melted open.

There is still a lot of ice on the north end with just a few openings here and there.

Send in the Flamingos.

I will hang out and have walleye fingers.

The Bomber Boat is ready but it would be very cold water..

See you on Opener Weekend.  I'll buy.

MM Malmo Mike

Hello East Side Gang, the Ertl Team and Mille Lacs Fishermen,

There is definite steady progress on the ice break up each day. Isle bay has a lot of open water and ice pack is shifting in out as a nice battering ram. The north end and Garrison Twin Pines has a lot of ice near shore but it is breaking up and deteriorating nicely. Red Door marina is open but ice is blocking the portal.

I will send in the Flamingos to do there Opener dance.

Thank God ~~ we have good walleye fingers at Hunters Point and up at the Pine Inn for the Malmo Brothers. Here we come. Don' know if we will get the boats in yet so we will go for the walleye finger Plan B.

They are playing GOLF today at Fiddlesticks. Nice. SUrvival GOLF as we say.

Have fun,

MM Malmo Mike

Hello East Side Gang, the Ertl Team and Mille Lacs Fishermen,

Tuesday Late Afternoon Update:

The lake is almost completely open on the south end and much of the East Side areas including Sunset Bay at Appledorn's and Hunter's Point area...

A large ice pack has blown and shifted to Twin Pines shore area and MyrMar.

I think we will have an official ICE OUT by Thursday if that last ice flow breaks up as expected.

Very cold water temperatures I presume.

Have Fun, MM Malmo

The boat is about ready...

The view from Hunter Winfield's today 6PM:

North wind blew last night and all of the ice is locked into south shore.  Ice as far as you can see over Vineland Bay and from south shore to past Spirit Island.  Wind is scheduled to move from N to E and then to ESE, therefore we should still see some shifting ice throughout day.  Not sure it will be enough to get the ice to drop.

Opening Day: 5 walleyes caught and carefully released in my boat .
There was still an ice flow to south/west area of the lake visible at that time.

At least we got a line wet and there are plenty of walleyes.

I think nothing beats Ludington ice fishing, it's a local speciality: http://ludingtonicefishing.com/ You will like it, I am sure of it. It's a real man's sport there.

Thanks for that update Bobber;

I was home in Late October for dock work but I did not get to check out Hunter's Point new bar.

I guess I was hanging out at the Pine Inn too much.

See you guys for Open Water.

Someone has to catch them.

I had to go to Maui. Here is my condo patio at Ka'anapali.IMG_1006.JPG
