Opener Report 5/11/15

I did see enough evidence that there are still fish in the lake. And some nice ones at that.

Water temp was 54. Boat traffic as suspected was way down from typical years. I personally didn't spend a lot of time on the water. Had my boat in the water Saturday night 6:30-9 and we boated 5 fish corking on the rocks. 25'er, 18.75, 17, 13, 12. We where in 12ft over rocks. Fishing leech on jigs and plain hooks. Plain hook out fished the jigs. We missed at least 5 additional fish. Brother Glen was fishing in a little deeper water 14 or so and he pulled in 8 fish. one 23 and the rest small 12-15 range. Some of the others that fished with us and put more time in. one boat 3 guys had 30 fish Saturday with 3 slots. 5 or 6 over fish and the rest smaller. Did see 2 27.5 fish also from another boat. Sunday was not a favorable day to be on the lake obviously. How did you do?

scraped my windshield off at 5:30 and launched my boat. We fished the north end between fishers and wilderness. Rigging is now impossible due to the zebra muscles. Wife and I lasted 3 hours, never saw a net come out. Boat traffic was minimal. We could not fish in the evening, but the report from our neighbors was better action corking in the evening. 1 3/4" of rain in our gage this morning in Sandstone. Hope it was that to on the lake.

I personally had a very poor opener! No activity on sonars at several depths and no real walleye bite.

I fished Saturday for the evening run from 2:30PM to 7:30PM and had no fish on sonars and no bites! I was fishing the Fisher resort rock pile, and deeper water gravel bars at 16 fow and 18 fow with the resort launch nearby.

I was fishing a very good proven leech rig with quality bait from Vados.

My big disappointment was that I could not locate any groups of fish on my Lowrance HDS sonars in 14, 16 or 18 fow in known fishing structures. I was surprised by not seeing a few fish suspended.

At Castaway's Marina, where I keep my boat in a slip, I saw only one nice slot size walleye and he was a beauty. The fisherman that caught him had three fish and had to release the others fishing all day Saturday. There were not many walleyes coming in that I witnessed!

Saturday evening a bunch of boats anchored in for bobber fishing on Fishers rock pile. I had shore commitments and could not stay out past late sunset.

Sunday's wind and cold made the fishing a real challenge but again o bites.

Sadly, I had to go to Teal's Market in Isle, to purchase some Canadian walleye filets. I have to come home (1,200 miles away) with a walleye dinner! The lake was exceptionally clear water and temperature of 54 degrees.

WTG Dr. O you kicked my ass!

We had two boats and boated 13 Walleye Saturday. 1 slot fish. fished 2 hours Sunday and boated zero fish. The time with friends was priceless. Enjoyed a great dinner Sunday night at Hunters Point. Fabulous Pizza. The lake needs the rain so we didn't mind catching up inside rather than on the boat. I will try again this weekend. Opening weekend has never been about the fish. It has always been about creating memories with great friends. The fish are just a bonus.

Started off early corking shaws reef.  Popped a nice 26er  right away and then 3 more smaller fish within the next hour.  That bite died off as the sun got up.  Switched over to rigging.  Marked fish in a drift area that started in 14 on out to 28.  No biters.  Went to trolling cranks and got a mix of smallies and several of those 12-14 incher eyes.

Blow day Sunday.evileye

Monday hit the same areas we got fish on opener with similar results.

Tues AM was blowing again.  Packed 'er up and headed home.

Nice to be back on the lake and hanging out at the cabin.  Plenty of chores to do between outings!  Looking forward to next weekend!
