Ice movement 11pm last evening!

The ice shifted with the wind last night around 11pm. It came in pretty quick, and stopped as fast as it started. The wind is blowing pretty good right now 20 mph and its staying put. The wind shift will take it to the norht on Monday? wait and see what it does...

check out my front yard! looks like the docks will be delayed as far as them getting in the lake for awhile?

Big Ice packs are continuing to blow by the Malmo Bay area about 1,000 yards from our shorelines; they are heading to the central Eastside of Mille Lacs unfortunately. The power of this wind is impressive ~ with gusts to 40mph. One boat was out 'drift fishing' for about 2 hours in front of Castaways and near shore, but the dirft was so fast I saw no fish activity.

White caps visible at most times everywhere in the Malmo Bay area .

There is sunshine at 4:00PM but a lot of ice moving to the Eastside shores areas.

Stay Safe Bobber and everyone in Agate Bay and down to Picard Point!

This wind out of the north-northwest is not slowing down yet nodisbelief  MM.

At 12:00PM Saturday, 5-11-13, Malmo Bay and the upper East Side waters of Mille Lacs are open water...with some large ice packs floating by frequently.

At this rate, we would have ice out by Sunday 5-12-13 in our visible range; of course the normal measurement is clear passage from Isle to Garrison to declare ICE OUT. Isle bay is stil ice bound.

WINDY:The winds are at 27-32mph on our Malmo Bay shoreline and so it is blowing very strong out of the North primarily and somewhat from the NorthWest to South and South East.

I will post some images of the lake taken as soon as possible.

Cloudy and very windy but the Malmo Bay is wide open by noon 05-11-13. smile MM smile

Here is another picture in front of Bobbers House. The ice advanced to about 20ft from his home.

Rob Passons and Brad Hawthorne on the pile.

The wind just switched here about 20 minutes ago--5 pm.--and it is heading east FAST! If it blows like this for the next 24 hrs.--it will be gone by the weekend I think.

Somebody is getting some ice in their laps as I type...the east cams should start seeing ice piles? It's going by here FAST!

I was by Bobber's house on Saturday when the ice was piling up. I am so glad for him and his neighbors that the ice stopped advancing. What an amazing experience.

The crazy ice story continues: Despite a nice mild day and sunset....

The ice pack has moved in tight against the Malmo Bay shoreline tonight due to moderate wind from the West.

So far no ice piles on shore or piling up luckily. So far...

This is not over yet by any means. Keep your head down Bobber. MM biggrin

Well, I see no ice--even with ten power glasses--from 65 ft. above the lake. Let's hope it stays clear and we can get a pic from above today. Will it be official today or tomorrow? A few hours we should know...

Looking at the web cam from Hunters that is where the ice went to. I think I saw their dock out yesterday and now it is pulled back in.

Thanks Doug. We still have floating ice in Malmo Bay and Agate Bay areas near shore.

We need a moderate wind to move it out and break it into tiny pieces for melting.

The lake level is improved from last fall ~ for dock placement, shore stations and docking your boats.

But I think tomorrow may be the day! MM smile

I would say, to be safe, Thursday, May 16th, 2013 would be the official ice out date. See if the Mille Lacs Messenger sees it that way...

I think if you look close, there is ice, maybe very poor water logged ice, on about the SE third of the lake today. The whiter ice to the mid eastern shores is better ice. But look closely and the water in the north and west seems darker than the "hazy" looking area in the middle.

So---maybe today but for sure tomorrow will be the date. The regime at the Mille Lacs Messenger makes the final call based on what a few of us see and tell them....and what they see.

So far--I have heard nothing official for today.

Currently winds out of east at 7, need more than that to get that sheet moving. Maybe by noon we will get the 15-20 to getter done.

Update on Ice movements: Thursday morning....

This morning the tightly packed ice flows in Malmo Bay and Agate Bay have moved at least 1,000+ yards off shore and are slowing floating outward due to light eastward winds. At least now we have a little breathing room and the easterly winds may help break up this ice flows further. YEAH.

We certainly have a ways to go yet, but shore damage is somewhat reduced for the Eastside and Malmo Bay areas I believe based on many past years there. MM  biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

It certainly looks like we have Ice Out Criteria met today from Isle Bay to Garrison. That would put

2013 Ice Out at May 17 8:00AM.

Late Thursday afternoon and evening, the east wind finally did the ice in that was in place earlier in the day that didin't allow the ride from Isle to Garrison.

Official ice out--May 16th, 2013 "between noon and midnight"
