The high winds blew open the northwestern 1/4-1/3 of the the lake on Tuesday. I still had pockets of open water this Wednesday afternoon with in eye sight of Picard Point. Its going to get cold tonite and Thursday nite which will make some ice. I think all the snow from the westside of the lake ended up in my yard?

I don't think there will be any safe walking ice near here by the weekend. It all depends on the freeze the next 48 hrs. It just don't make that much ice over a 24 hr period.

Those spots that were open on Wednesday would be what I would be concerned about for this weekend. Sure you might find 5+ inches in some spots.......but take acouple of steps and opp's....new ice only 2+ maybe

I'm sure the resort guys will be out and making some checks very soon....We also can monitor the ice depth up on the NW corner of the lake. That will give us an idea how these new spots will be improving as far as thickness goes.....watch the Red Door reports etc..

12/3/2010 -8 degrees 6-Plus inches maximum, alot of drifted snow where the thickness is 2 inches and sinking. The north end is beginning to crack and heave out in it's usual spot 100 yards from shore. We'll be making ice with low temperatures, but the snow will start this afternoon and continue throughout Saturday with total accumulation 1 to 5 inches.
If you're going out to fish this weekend, I'd walk out and leave the wheeler or snowmobile on shore and bring some ice picks to get back up onto the ice. Check the ice thickness regularly and avoid shallow rock piles.

Thanks T2J,
A very good report and advice Jon.
Sounds like the snow froecast is going to make the new ice tricky as usual.
I never liked the 2 inch ice with the new snow making it sink. That is just Ugly.
We need some more cold days/nights to get it safe.

In the meantime: I gotta finish some final outdoor spruce tree Christmas lights
(a Honey-do) and you can keep tracking those nice walleyes.

Here we have Malmo Mike:
