June 30 report from the pond

Myself and Fife picked up a couple stragglers and hit the water this morning.  The two guys joining us were just a couple great guys we met at the resort Friday night. We were armed with crankbaits, boards, lead, and a cooler of refreshments.  The plan for the day was to get these guys on their biggest fish ever.  We started out about 3 miles out of Hunter's and it was steady from the start.   The Thunderstick Jr. and Salmo Hornets were hot all day long.  We had numerous 25-27" walleyes inhaling the Hornets behind the leadcore line.  It was suprising to see these big fish hitting the smallest baits we had out.  Shad raps in multiple colors picked up a few fish as did the Cabela's Purple Passion Cabela's Walleye Diver.  We focused our efforts on the schools of fish adjacent to pods of bait.  We had times where the Lowrance looked more like it was on simulator mode.  A ball of bait 5-10 feet off bottom and a few arcs just below or on the sides.  Amazingly, we had this area all to ourselves on a beautiful Mille Lacs day.  The boats were piled up on the midlake flats, but we never got within a mile of them.  We ended the day with 25-30 walleyes during our 6 hour outing.  It was a great day to experiment and teach some up and coming anglers a few Mille Lacs tricks.  These guys are hooked and already planning their week long stay at Hunter's next year.  When the action on the reefs slows down, don't be afraid to drop some cranks and start trolling the deep basin.  Come up and enjoy some of the best walleye fishing you will find anywhere.
